Now that the internship cycle is complete, it is time to assess the whole process and adjust my Goals, consider the Reality of my past and present professional career by taking into account my Options and the Obstacles that I had and will have to face, as well as plan my Way forward.

Since the beginning of this course, I was aiming to apply for internships because I strongly believe that even though education is, to quote Nelson Mandela, 'the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world', all of your theoretical knowledge is somehow useless if you do not put it into practice. Taking all of the theory of the course and applying it, by evaluating the structure and work conditions of the cultural sector (or, in my case, the film sector), is the best way to actually acquire knowledge, since you observe real examples of what you have learned in class. Internships can also make you more employable, which is really important in a city as competitive as London, especially for me, a foreigner, who has never worked in the UK before, a country where employers really value UK based work experience.

Bearing in mind that my long-term aspiration in life is to work in the film industry as a film producer or, alternatively, a festival director, an internship was also a way for me to gain some expertise on the field, since I had little experience in the film industry. Looking at my original goals for this internship, I feel really satisfied with what I achieved, since I got the chance to work at a respectable British film festival, and I developed a nuanced perspective of the cultural economy and cultural labour.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Reality

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

Realistically speaking, based on my previous academic and professional experience, it was highly unlikely that I could get a job at a production company. The choice to prioritise on applications for film festival positions was a conscious and logical one, since my previous experience in events would make it easier for me to find an internship. After all, a film festival is the best place for film industry members to network and explore new job opportunities, let alone if you are actually working at said festival.

Looking back on my CV before this internship, I see a man who, even though he is quite inexperienced in the field, he seems really passionate about film culture and film events. Because of my home country's financial situation, art projects are rare and it is really hard to get into the film industry, since people rely almost exclusively on their own social and professional circles to find people to assist them in their projects. However, if I am completely honest, I feel like I should have tried to get a more active role in film festivals, and take some film production lessons that would showcase my interest in the field. However, I choose to live my life with no regrets, as the 'game' is still on, and there are still plenty of opportunities for me in the near future. Better late than never.

Before my internship at EEFF I was aiming for an exciting but yet approachable organisation, which could potentially offer me a position based on the experience I already had. I could not hope to work at the BFI or the BBC. It is not that I would not love to, but even though I dream big, I also like to be realistic. Since I had experience in festivals and events, it was more feasible and logical to search for an internship at a medium sized organisation.

From now on, I feel more comfortable setting my expectations higher. Breaking into the film industry is hard, as you usually need to have good connections, or be someone's personal recommendation. This experience at EEFF opened up a lot of new opportunities for me; it got me an interview at MoMA, and a lot of connections in the UK film industry, even though with low-profile people who still struggle in the field. You have to start somewhere though, right?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Way forward

Bearing in mind that I do not wish to return to Greece after my studies, I will focus on sending as many CVs as possible, for jobs in film production and festivals, but this time in a Production Assistant position. The good thing is that there are so many different ways to go if you want to embark a career at film events and film production, and I wish to explore all of them. The main goal is to make my breakthrough into film production, in any capacity, by the end of 2014. Not necessarily with a high profile, stable, or well paid job; just something to explore how things work behind the camera.

Furthermore, I am considering that a good way to go would be to focus on part-time, or project-based jobs, so that I will have the opportunity to get experience in all different kinds of positions; after all, a producer needs to know how everything works so as to tie all of the different aspects of a project together. Moreover, a lot of film institutions offer short courses on film related subjects, and I believe that it would be a good idea to attend some courses on film production so as to reinforce my academic knowledge on the matter.

I already began sending CVs for jobs that I find appealing, but, for now, the immediate focus of attention should be on my dissertation so that I ensure that I will achieve a respectable, if not excellent, overall grade in my MA. When all of my academic duties are over, I will resume the job hunting more intensely, with the hope that by the next 4 years I will be producing my own feature films. This time I will be the one submitting films for festivals and not the other way around!

It is so weird how time flies when you are having a good, creative time. The festival is officially over and even though I am quite relieved that it is done, I cannot help but feel a little bit melancholic at the same time. Working at the EEFF has been an amazing experience for me and so have the 2 weeks of the actual festival. I got to work with new people and explore new, interesting aspects of the job (namely venue managing and what the work of a runner entails), I had the chance to meet and take care of foreign directors and producers who visited the festival but did not really knew anyone else in the city, and came across people that could potentially be beneficial during job seeking after this MA is over.

After the intensity of the first few days, things got more chilled as time passed, since we had fewer and fewer responsibilities, as time passed. The most integral part of the last days was... partying. I am saying this in all seriousness. Festival guests that came to London for a few days wanted to see what the night life of the city has to offer, and the EEFF team was more than happy to show them around. Apart for been good hosts, going out at night after a hard day's work also helps to bring the team closer, as well as offers networking opportunities, especially in the festival parties, where a lot of people of the industry are gathered together, having fun, and getting drunk, which makes it easier for them (but also for me) to talk to them. It might sound weird, but parties are indeed a vital part of a festival, not only because of the fact that practically everyone likes dancing and drinking, but also because it reinforces team spirit and gives a sense of community to audience and guests.

Parties and fun aside, there is nothing that can make a festival worker happier than listening to directors and producers saying how pleased they are with the co-operation and how thankful they are for all our help. It makes it all worthwhile to know that the filmmakers are satisfied with how it went. That is practically the very reason we are all doing this!

It is always sad to say goodbye to something you love. On the bright side, this experience gave me so much insight into how film festivals are run, that I will be forever grateful to everyone that I got to work together with this year. My negotiation skills got better, thanks to the King's Professional Skills programme and of course the practice that I did during my internship (securing films with a low screening fee is not an easy job, but sales agents and producers are always happy to lower the price for a better position in the programme that will offer more exposure) and I got more confident and fluent (even though I still need to work on my accent, as my Director stated that 'your written speech is better than your oral'). Furthermore, I found out what my strengths and weaknesses are and how I can sell my skills to a new employer, and, most importantly, I was able to secure a couple of interviews because of my experience here. Plus, it was quite satisfying putting things I learned in this MA into practice.

There is still a long way to go till I reach my highest career aspirations, and a lot of things yet to learn but, as they say, 'you have to start somewhere', and my start was pretty brilliant!

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Things I realised after the first 4 days of the festival:

a) There is a hell of a lot of things that can go wrong when you are working on an event

The East End Film Festival kicked off last Friday with the spectacular Opening Night Gala at Genesis Cinema, that included the World Premiere of Dermaphoria, special guest Ron Perlman, a fancy party at Trapeze, lots of alcohol, and exciting networking opportunities. It is really hard to describe with words the feeling that I had during the Opening Night Gala; it was a mixture of excitement, anxiety and relief, mostly because everything worked out fine, at least as far as my responsibilities are concerned.

However, there were a lot of things that went wrong in the first couple of days, proving that running any kind of events requires you to think on your feet and be resourceful. The first few days I got to help out with the management of the EEFF events at Red Gallery, which included Grits 'N' Gravy. Grits 'N' Gravy was the first event that took place in that venue, during the first day of the festival, and things actually got kind of messy. The space was not fully decorated when guests and audience arrived, and due to the fact that it was the first day of screenings, some short films were not properly screen tested and we had to cancel the screening of two of them because, as it turned out, the copies we had were defective. The manager of the venue did her best with what she got but unfortunately it was not enough for a perfect day. Luckily, our guests were happy with the turnout, even though not even half of the venue was full. At least, we were better prepared for the rest of the events there; we took better care of the venue's appearance, screen and sound tested all of the films on time, and advertised the rest of the events better. For instance, on Sunday we had a full house at the World Premiere of a documentary about the Levellers, which was followed by a concert from the iconic indie rock band.

Taken from the East End Film Festival's Facebook page

As far as One Stop Film Shop is concerned, all of its activities finished on Saturday and there were a lot of things that one needs to take into account for next year (that is, if they plan to do the same thing next year). First of all, nobody really cares for short talks on film related subjects and that was quite obvious from the minimal turn out. However, a lot of people showed up for the screenings. Especially on Saturday, when we screened the Top 15 films from the My London Film Competition, that the festival organised along with Time Out London. That was even more satisfying for me, because I had the idea for that screening; a way to thank the contestants for their submissions and honour the creme of the crop. Moreover, the space was beautiful, cosy and arty and it increased the visibility of the festival. A lot of people were getting inside asking for information and getting flyers and programmes, proving that such a space can be beneficial for the festival, but only as long as there are more activities and screenings going on inside.

It is quite obvious that festivals need a lot of attention to detail, and extremely good organisation and communication between the whole team. Also, venue managing is super interesting! It might be extremely stressful, but at the same time it is so fulfilling seeing people leaving the venue satisfied, with a smile in their faces.

By the way, I already met a director, a producer and two actors. That is my payment for all the free work that I have been doing!

There are three things that I learned from this last, stressful week:

a) In the Cultural and Creative Industries you need to feel comfortable working on your own, but you should also not be intimidated by working with a big team. Communication might be relatively tricky but on the bright side, there are so many things you can learn from people that come from different backgrounds, and even countries. Employers expect you to be able to work autonomously, but also willing to cooperate with others, since nothing in the CCIs can be planned, organised and executed thoroughly without somebody's assistance. For instance, film festivals require people that acquire different kinds of expertise. You need to have someone in control of marketing/social media, content (online and physical), print traffic, press, hospitality, awards, venues, transport, graphic design, events, sponsors, and so on. It is physically impossible for one person to deal with all of these, but it is also highly unlikely for anything to work without the smooth collaboration between employees from different departments. For example, the one responsible for hospitality needs to talk with the Head of Programming and find out who is invited to the festival, then work with the marketing team in order to advertise the guest's arrival, and so on.

Taken from the East End Film Festival's Facebook page

b) If you wish to work in events, you really need to master your time management skills. In my case, One Stop Film Shop appeared in the last minute, and it's incredibly stressful to organise a full week of activities just a week before they are actually launched. I had to brainstorm for ideas of activities, including screenings and talks, then find the contact details of people that we wanted to invite, email them with our idea, or even call them if they fail to reply to us quickly. Since I was not really working there full time, I had to arrange everything perfectly time-wise, and luckily everything turned out just fine, at least as far as programming is concerned. It remains to be seen if this venture will turn out right. By the way, the space is absolutely stunning. Judge for yourselves here.

c) One of Alison's advises during my research for speakers for One Stop film Shop, was to look for people that work at the Tech City, since most of the talks we were planning had to do with film and technology. I was not really familiar with the fact that London had its own version of Silicon Valley, let alone that it was located in East London. According to this infographic from MIT Technology Review (n.d.), it turns out that Tech City is one of the largest technology clusters in the world, that expands from Old Street to Stratford, with most of the companies concentrated around Shoreditch (BBC, 2010).

That realisation was particularly interesting due to the act that I feel like I am applying things that I learned from this MA in practice. According to Porter (1998), a cluster is a geographic concentration of companies, suppliers and institutions that specialise in specific sectors, and are competing but also co-operating with each other. It is like a city within a city, a place where cultural products are created and consumed at the same time.

From an academic perspective, Tech City is quite interesting, as far as theories of co-location are concerned. As Comunian and Chapain has stated (2010), through co-location the CCIs create a network that provides networking opportunities, the advantage of geographical proximity that allows workers to check out their competition and interact face-to-face with colleagues from other companies, thus giving a strong sense of belonging to the CCI workers, who connect their creative work with a specific place. It would be really interesting to explore how that particular part of London came to be the centre of technological advances of the capital, and how it adds to the city's marketability in a touristic sense. It is too late to change my dissertation topic now, right?

The last exams of my life are finally over! No time to celebrate though. I have been away from work for the last two weeks, and so I had to catch up. The festival is only two weeks away and there are still lots that need to be done. Unfortunately, the programming part of the festival is more or less over, so now I got assigned different tasks that related to the job that I did before but at the same time offered a better insight into different parts of organising a film festival. It was also interesting to work closely with more people from the team, which keeps on getting bigger and bigger the closer we get to the festival.

So now, for the next weeks, my tasks will be to work along with the Film Coordinator in order to help him arrange print traffic (mostly for the films that I helped securing), find and contact potential hosts for various Q&As, help out with hospitality (for filmmakers whose invitations I handled) and help curate the activities of One Stop Film Shop, a special pop-up space that the festival will be running from 9-15 June with Little White Lies Magazine, one of the UK's most respected film magazines. The shop is located at Old Street Station and will act as a hub for festival guests, cinephiles and Londoners to alight for short conversations and film screenings.

Let's see how this will go...

The closer we get to the announcement of this year's festival programme, the more hectic my days in the office are. My last day in the office, before my studying-for-the-exams break, coincided with the day that we were locking the programme and I had to finish all of my tasks before leaving. We had to confirm in about 24 hours all of the "pending" titles, which, unfortunately, were a lot.

About 10 titles got cancelled in the last minute, which made me realise that nothing is really certain in this job and that you always need to have a plan B. Maybe it was even an issue of lack of organisation. If we have confirmed more of the films earlier, then we would not have to be so stressed in the last minute. It was quite crazy during the last hours before the announcement and I gladly stayed over for more than 7 hours (which is the amount of hours that I usually work) to help out. It was as stressful as it was exciting; a very good chance to test my ability to work under pressure and manage my time, and, once again, I proved to myself and to my colleagues, that I, somehow, work better under pressure. I tend to be more organised and concentrated, which is a good asset if you seek employment in the cultural and creative industries.
Then, there is the special event about Palestinian films, for which I chased all the copies and arranged traffic; the exceptional Palo Alto with James Franco (one of the "Coming of Age" films that we are doing this year, since the festival is also becoming a teenager); Hong Khaou's Lilting, one of the (unfortunately) few, but absolutely mesmerizing LGBT films of this year's line-up; Mistaken for Strangers, a really entertaining documentary about the relationship between the lead singer of National, Matt Berninger, and his brother Tom, the director of the film; and The Golden Dream, by far my favourite from the Mexican Focus that we are co-curating with last year's winner Sebastian Hoffman.

The last couple of days were crazy in the office and it's amazing what coordinated, team effort can do. Half of the money for the EEFF's first crowd funding campaign was raised in the last two days! And just 12 minutes before the end, the campaign reached its goal! Well, that was intense!

Apart from the fact that a strong, cooperative team is key for any cultural business that wishes to survive and prosper, the EEFF's crowd funding campaign is also an apparent example of how increasingly important social media are in modern marketing, especially for small businesses that cannot afford the extremely costly traditional advertising of print, radio and TV.

Social media marketing refers to the creation of online content that aims to grasp the audience's attention and urge them to share that contact in their social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+, Tumblr, Flickr, etc), blogs and websites, thus creating what Jan Kietzmann and Ana Canhoto describe (2013) as "electronic word of mouth". In the last hours of the EEFF crowd funding campaign, tweets and re-tweets were crucial, as they generated this electronic word of mouth which resulted in drawing a lot of attention in the campaign and helping EEFF to reach its goal.

The value of social media originates on the collective and the individual, instead of the mass (Evans, 2012). Nancy R. Jones (2013) highlights the assets of social media marketing by pointing out:

a) its ability to target large audiences quickly and cost-effectively, and enable branding
b) how it enables direct feedback through interactive procedures such as polls, comments on facebook posts, and Q&As on twitter

The EEFF team is heavily using facebook and twitter as its main marketing tools, for all of the reasons above. Also, it is pretty obvious that, because of the festival's financial situation, it is impossible for EEFF to afford a lot of traditional advertising.

I begin to realise that working in a warm, friendly and creative environment such as the one of EEFF is probably one of the best things that happened to my short professional career. It is indeed really important to find a job that gives you pleasure, especially if you plan to do this job for a lot of years to come. My parents worked in jobs that they never liked, and I could see how exhausted they were from the endless routine of their jobs that did not give anything back to them apart from a relatively good salary. I am glad that they always pushed me to pursue my dreams, since now I am realising that having a job that fulfils you is crucial. After all, you spend 1/3 of your day working, you might as well do something that you feel like it is worth it.

Working at EEFF does not feel like a burden to me. Obviously, it can be really stressful some times, mostly because I want to make a good impression through my work, but at the same time I am enjoying it so much that it feels like I am not even working. What saddens me though is that working at film festivals is rarely a stable job. Like most of the jobs in the Cultural and Creative Industries, at least according to Gill's research (2011), it is a project based job that you do for up to 6 months per year (if you are lucky), and then you have to seek other projects for the rest of the year. Some people work here part time, while having another stable job all year through. Most of them though are not that fortunate. The CCIs are ruthless and demanding. And, especially in the film business, based on what we discussed in the office the other day with people that are more experienced than me, if you do not make a big name for yourself (or work in the top organisations in the field like the BBC or the BFI) it is highly unlikely that you will ever make enough money so that you could afford a flat on your own, especially in a city like London. That is why networking is such an essential part of our industries. On the other hand, as I said to my father when he told me that my life is going to be really difficult if I choose to follow this path, I prefer to starve than have a job that makes me miserable.

At this point, a montage of inspirational speeches from movies seems like the key to lighten the mood and regain confidence:

Money cannot buy happiness but it can buy practically everything else. Today EEFF launched its crowd-funding campaign, in order to keep on offering free parallel activities, along with its main programme. A few months ago, the festival became constituted as a non-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC). CICs, according to the official website of the UK government, are social enterprises that use their surplus for the public good; they reinvest any profits they have in their business instead of taking advantage of it by dispersing it among shareholders.

That, of course, puts limits to what activities the festival is able to organize and what kind of films it can attract. In other words, financial deficiency puts restrictions into EEFF's creativity. However, EEFF wants to stay independent, which is an honourable choice, and for this reason, a crowd-funding campaign seems like a rational venture. It is a smart move, as EEFF takes pride in being a festival for and of the people. Headline sponsors and stakeholders are unnecessary.

All this brings in mind some of the main issues we discussed in one of my optional modules, Art of Management: Management of Art. According to Justin Lewis 'Art, Culture and Enterprise' (1990, p.5), art is a 'cultural practice' that entails the production of a particular object, which functions 'as a self-conscious, personal, or collective expression of something'. On the other hand, economics is a science which analyses social behaviour 'as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses' (Robbins, 1945, p.16). For me, the combination of these two is the essence of what my job and every job in the Cultural and Creative Industries ensues. Even though profit might not always be the purpose, the cultural industries, as all other industries, need an financial basis on which to prosper (Frey, 2003).

What do all of these mean in a practical level? Relentlessly negotiating screening fees and trying alternative deals with sales representatives, venue owners, and so on. Insufficient funds can sometimes lead you to deadlocks. It is true that the commercialization of art can degenerate it, and undermine its value and its mission (Austin and Devin, 2009). However, as Jonathan Swift said 'a wise person should have money in their head, but not in their heart'. And that's EEFF's mentality in a sentence.

As I already said before, EEFF moved its offices recently to 3 Mills Studios, one of the most important film and TV studios in the UK, that have hosted the London Olympic Opening and Closing ceremonies, and provided spaces for filming for movies like Attack the Block (2011), 28 Days Later (2001), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), and The Reader (2008), among others. Moreover, lots of film and TV companies are located inside 3 Mills Studios, like Moviescope Magazine, Talent Talks casting agency and London International School of Performing Arts. It is like a small creative cluster of its own.

In order to celebrate EEFF's addition to the 3 Mills Studio family, they threw a little party at a very fancy, although somehow alternative, bar close to the canal at Hackney Wick, with free drinks and pizza! Perfect opportunity for networking, and also an ideal chance to get closer with the EEFF staff. It seems that most of the people working here are volunteers and they have been added recently in the group. We are a constantly growing team that includes no less than 30 people; maybe even more, I have lost track, it seems like everyday a brand new face pops up!

Highlight of the party: the Head of the Programming team and the Director of the festival (aka, my bosses), thanked me for my help and contribution to the team and proposed that I take even more responsibility in the weeks to come, with assisting the curation of some parallel events of the festival, like Grits 'n' Gravy (an all-day-long event with screenings of films from the Southern US, with live music and free Bloody Marys), the Masonic Temple screenings [a two-day event with screenings of films about witchcraft and magic - from classic Italian giallo horror films to contemporary masterpieces like The Prestige (2006) and Pan's Labyrinth (2006)] and a fortnightly film event at Red Gallery. Nothing feels better than positive feedback. Moral boost: check.

First day at work! Well, this is my first job that involves me speaking in a different language, which was not really a problem for me but that does not mean that it was not weird at the beginning. I was greeted by a very welcoming team of people and got introduced to the Head of Programming. The first day was quite enlightening about what my job entails. As a Programming Assistant I will have to look at the programmes of other film festivals that host bold, independent features and check out which of the films hosted there are actually eligible for EEFF. Apart from that, I will have to look at old programmes from specific film festivals and track the work of then first time directors, who are now finishing or have already completed their second features. The research procedure is quite open, so I can use my own resources, knowledge and connections in order to discover films that would fit in EEFF's mentality and aesthetics.

Source: http://developedsociety.wordpress.com/

I will also be responsible for contacting the sales representatives, distributors, directors or producers of each film, so that I will request a screener in order for the Programming Team to watch and review the film, and decide whether or not it is suitable for the festival. What is good about that is that I also get the opportunity to watch films that are not accessible to the public due to lack of distribution and exposure. Plus, the Head of Programming seems to trust my taste in films and encourages me to express my opinion.

Moreover, I even got my own '@eastendfilmfestival.com' email address, and a pass to get in and out of 3 Mills Studio - yes, the offices of EEFF are situated inside 3 Mills Studio! How exciting is that?

Overall, I am very satisfied with the environment and my responsibilities. It's friendly but not relaxed, and even the more time-consuming duties are enjoyable. I personally research for films all day long anyway, and now, as a plus, I get to contact directors and producers with whom I would potentially like to work with in the future. Fingers crossed.

You are responsible for researching for films that fit with the ethos of the festival, putting the festival's programme together in such a way so as to create an exciting, entertaining but also educational and intriguing experience for the festival's audience. It's the heart of every film festival and an essential part of film culture.

According to its website, it is held annually in London where it attracts more than 30,000 film lovers per year. It showcases novel and daring films from all over the world, but mostly focuses in the work of first or second time directors. It also has a vast variety of partnerships and sponsors that include the British Film Institute, Amnesty International, Film London, The Barbican, 3 Mills Studios and Shooting People. What is even more impressive is its list of patrons, that includes the Academy Award winner and film legend Danny Boyle, director of 'Trainspotting' (1996) and 'Slumdog Millionaire' (2008), the brilliant Joe Wright, director of 'Atonement' (2007) and 'Hanna' (2011), as well as the renowed composer Michael Nyman, nominated for three Golden Globes for his work in 'The Piano' (1993), 'Gattaca' (1997) and 'The End of the Affair' (1999).

After 9 unsuccessful applications (for which I either got a negative response or none at all), I finally got an interview invitation from the East End Film Festival. This is beyond exciting but, I will not lie, it also makes me feel a little tense. I have not been interviewed for a job for a very long time, and I am afraid that I might be a little rusty. Thankfully, the Careers Service of King's College have been quite helpful. I went there to get some advice the day after I received the positive reply from the East End Film Festival (which, by the way, was my second choice for an internship, as I mentioned in my Internship Plan) and the lady that I met reminded me of the basic dos and don'ts:

1) Learn as much as you can about the company. It always helps if you look interested in their works and know what they have been doing in the past. That way they feel that you have a personal connection with their organisation already.

2) Don't hide your weaknesses but make them look like they can turn into assets for the company. For me that is the most difficult part as I always found the question 'What is your weakness?' ridiculous. The obvious answer is 'I am a perfectionist' but if you really want to stand out you need to be more creative.

3) Be relaxed and confident, but do not exaggerate. Do not act like you own the place but try and show that you really want to work there and that you have everything it takes.

My interview is in 4 days, which gives me a lot of time to prepare. For now, I am just looking at cinematic examples of job interviews. I will try to avoid looking like this ...

... and be more like this ...

When the very stressful weeks of essay writing (for my optional module "Art of Management: Management of Art") got over, and the essay was successfully submitted, it seemed like the right time to resume my quest for an internship. After visiting the Careers Centre, I earned valuable advice on how to write my CV and covering letter, and I incorporated their corrections and suggestions in the latest version of my CV. I, then, started communicating with the companies that were at the top of my list.

My first attempt was fruitless, as, after all, it seems that Sundance Film Festival London is not looking for interns. However, that does not mean that I cannot apply for a position as a volunteer, which will at least fulfil my goal of enhancing my CV by adding experience gained in the UK. As for the rest of the companies (DNA, See-Saw, Recorder Picture Company), none of them has replied yet, which either means that they rejected me or that they are taking their time. I choose to keep positive and believe the latter; after all, it has been just 10 days since I emailed all of them. I guess I should be more patient.

From now on, I will open up my research to more possibilities. My essay for "Art of Management" was focusing on the problems that the film distribution industry is facing nowadays, in an era of digitisation and financial crisis. During my research on the subject, I realised that distribution is an aspect of film that is also quite intriguing. It might not be a bad idea to explore my options in that field as well. I randomly came across a distribution company named Peccadillo Pictures, which is the main distributor of LGBT movies in the UK, and has actually distributed some of my most favourite queer films of all time. I was lucky enough to find out that they are currently looking for interns. My next move will be to get in touch with them, and try and find even more distribution companies, in order to broaden my horizons as well as my opportunities for an internship.

The first one that I attended involved boosting my influencing and negotiation skills.

During my internship in HELEXPO S.A., I had to persuade foreign entrepreneurs to attend an exhibition about renewable and conventional energy sources, and negotiating fees was a big part of this. However, even though I already have some experience in negotiating, I do not feel very confident about my negotiation skills.

Source: http://sonofalbert.tumblr.com/page/3, taken from 'Pretty Persuasion' (2005) directed by Marcos Siega

This seminar's goal was to ensure that we have a better perception of how the process of a negotiation works. Apart from an extensive presentation on the key elements and the essential skills that someone must obtain in order to have the advantage when negotiating, at the end of the seminar we had to put our newly acquired knowledge into practice through a role play. We were divided in teams of two, and, in this hypothetical scenario, two employees from two different departments of the same company (one from HR and one from Finance) had to reach an agreement about the expenses of a business, weekend trip for the whole company. The Finance employee had to persuade the HR employee that keeping the cost down is the most important thing while the HR employee wanted to guarantee that all the employees will have a good time.

Overall, it was an interesting seminar that gave me a better insight as far as negotiations are concerned. Some key points that I noted and I will try to put into practice in my future work experiences are the following:

It's important that you have set your limits and goals before initiating a negotiation. A smart move would be to set longer term goals than the deal on the table. You might even get a better deal in the end.

You should always be prepared beforehand (do your research and stick to your limit).

Pay attention to body language (the more space you use the most confident you seem, plus eye contact is key - a confident smile does not hurt either).

Never let emotions take control of your actions. It is crucial to maintain your distance and keep calm. It is easier for someone to take advantage of you if you seem disorientated and confused.

Do not hesitate to walk away from bad deals. If an offer does not fit your set goals then there is no point of taking it.

Same goes when planning your career. You have to prepare your every move, you need to create alternatives, avoid dead-ends and never forget what your ultimate goal is: to win (in our case, to achieve a desirable position in the industry/sector you are interested in).

"Winning" can be interpreted in various ways by different people. Everyone has his/her own desires and ambitions. Which are mine? Since a was younger I always dreamed of being an active and valuable part of the film industry. I love movies. I love watching them, talking/writing about them and occasionally making them. Throughout the years, my aspirations about which role I would like to have inside the vast universe of the film industry has altered many times. Director? Screenwriter? Editor? Film critic? They are all very intriguing and occasionally glamorous occupations. But none of them is what actually makes my heart quiver. If someone asked me today what I aspire to do when I grow up, my response would be: either get involved in film production or film festivals. There is something about these two occupations that really fascinates me; it is probably the thrill of creating something from scratch and following its course as it evolves.

In any case, as the epigram says, "Rome wasn't built in a day". In the same way, one cannot just become a film producer from one day to another. According to the team behind the website 'My First Job in Film' (n.d.), film producers usually have to work their way to the top. They tend to have a lot of experience in other departments of film making (mainly entry level jobs or assistant jobs in production), and a powerful network. And what better place to build a network than a film festival!

That being said, my main goal for an internship will be top film festivals that take place in London as well as production companies that are either based or have a division in London. After a lot of research I came up with the "Big 5", my top 5 choices for my internship. From the most desirable to the slightly less:

1. Sundance Film Festival London

2. East End Film Festival

3. DNA Films
4. See Saw Films

5. Recorded Picture Company

Apart from the "Big 5", I have also gathered information about other production and distribution companies, just in case that all applications in the "Big 5" fail. The back-up choices include Metrodome, 20th Century Fox, Pathe Productions, Vertigo Films, TLA Releasing and Verve Pictures.

Which are my next moves? First of all, I have to visit the Careers Centre and get my CV checked (it does not hurt to get a second opinion). Then I need to attend some of the elective seminars from the King's Professional Skills Programme, in order to reinforce my skills in certain areas, like networking, negotiating and leading a team. In order to strengthen my CV a little bit more, I must start looking for volunteering opportunities in the film industry. I might have some experience in events management and festivals but I understand that British employers value more work experiences gained inside the UK. Last but not least, when I will return from my Christmas holidays, I need to send my covering letter and CV to Sundance Film Festival; it takes place in April, so the first week of the new year is probably the best period to start my communication with them.
That was the day I found out that I got accepted into King's College London, in order to attend a postgraduate course on Cultural and Creative Industries. Exciting times! Fascinating opportunities opened up for me that day. Not only because King's College is among the best universities in the world, or because all the modules seemed very intriguing (at last, a chance for me to study about something that I'm really passionate about). One of the main reasons why I chose and wished to be a part of this Master was its internship programme.

I always believed that putting theory into practice is the most significant part of education. When I was searching for an MA, my priority was to find a programme that offered internships and had good connections with professionals of the field that I was interested in; film. An MA that will not just enhance my theoretical knowledge, but also prepare me for the working arena. After all, I could argue that one can learn a lot more from a professional who is working for decades in the cultural and creative industries, rather than from a book about the cultural and creative industries.

This blog will follow the whole procedure of my internship hunt: applications, interviews and so on, along with my actual experience <strike>if</strike> when I will find an internship (let's keep positive, shall we?). The blog will help me critically evaluate my whole experience and develop a better understanding of my skills, my weaknesses and my future goals, as well as, it will help the Module Convenor to assess the way in which I will link my theoretical knowledge with my internship experience.
